Extra Mile celebrates its fifth year of raising funds – at the Holiday Inn, on 28 February
Filed 27.02.2008
2007’s Extra Mile Four-Nation Challenge, on 21–23 September, saw more than 45 teams ride in relay over 500 miles through Belgium,
France, Germany and Luxembourg, finishing back on Belgian soil.
The charity event, funded and partly organised by Heald Solicitors, with the support of Milton Keynes Grand Union and Bedford
Park Rotary clubs, last year celebrated its fifth year. Heald’s senior partner and charity trustee Martin Banham-Hall initiated
the bike ride in 2003, with its format evolving over the years, to become a unique annual event that is now firmly established in
the region’s calendar.
Martin, who has cycled in all five challenges, commented: “Extra Mile takes a different route each year through beautiful
countryside and is open to both local businesses and the general public, often sponsored by their employers. It is not a race
but a flexible relay, so more experienced teams tend to carry out longer stints while novices take shorter but more frequent turns.
It is universally said that Extra Mile is very well organised and a great opportunity for networking and making new friends.
Whether or not you are not a regular cyclist, the 40 miles per person each day over three days can be a challenge but, if you
prepare beforehand, it is an event for people at all ability levels and provides a terrific sense of achievement.”
Heald Solicitors has invited all participants from the 2007 event to a presentation night on 28 February, to be held at the Holiday Inn,
near Newport Pagnell. Food and drink will be provided for guests. The total raised for charity in 2007 will be announced at the
event with the money being presented by the Mayor of Milton Keynes to the main charities chosen by Heald and the two rotary clubs:
Dreamflight, Inter-Action MK and MKGU Rotary Club Charitable Trust (please see charities page for further information).
The evening will also mark the official launch of this year’s Extra Mile Challenge. Full details and a downloadable entry form
will be available on this Web site after 28 February.
“Last year’s challenge was a great deal of fun, with plenty of camaraderie in the evenings, when everyone joined up for supper,”
said Mr Banham-Hall. “The best bit is always the last night: we all get together for a slap-up meal – and everyone is
justifiably thrilled with their achievement, creating a wonderful buzz!”
