Extra Mile Massif Challenge 26-28 September 2008
The Extra Mile Massif Challenge, team building, fun, camaraderie throughout the whole journey
from the north of France to the Massif Central.
Travel
We cross by Eurotunnel From Folkestone to Calais on the afternoon of Thursday 25th September and drive to Lens in
Nord Pas de Calais (60 miles by autoroute) where we stay overnight before starting the Challenge on Friday 26th
September. We return from Calais on the evening of Monday 29th September. The 3 days’ cycling are 26th, 27th and
28th September.
The three stages are
Day 1: Lens to Fontainebleau
Day 2: Fontainebleau to Bourges
Day 3: Bourges to Vichy
Day 1: Lens to Fontainebleau (180 Miles)
Our starting point is Lens, south-west of Lille. From there we head south, through the Forêt de Compiègne and across the
Marne and the Seine to finish outside the Château de Fontainbleau, 40 miles south of Paris. Used by the Kings of
France from the 12th century, the palace was transformed in the 16th century by Francois I and was Napoleon's
favourite residence.
Day 2: Fontainebleau to Bourges (175 Miles)
Our sights are now set on the Loire Valley. Bourges is slightly off the beaten trail of this region's attractions, but this “City
of Art and History” has played an important part in French history and is noted for its Gothic cathedral, sculpted mansions,
stately palaces and a bustling medieval quarter
Day 3: Bourges to Vichy (150 Miles)
We now encounter the sharper inclines of the Massif Central as the Challenge reaches its climax in the Parc Naturel
Régional des Volcans D'Auvergne. The finishing point is at the foot of the Puy de Dôme (1,463 m), the highest of a
chain of volcanic peaks. We hope to offer an option to ride up this!
From the finish, teams will drive to Vichy, the most elegant city in Auvergne, for our traditional end-of-Challenge dinner.
